Desktop vs. Laptop Computers
The desktop and laptop markets have different benefits to offer consumers, and by taking the time to analyze some of the differences between these two types of computers, a user can be assured that they have the computer that can cover all their individual needs.
The most obvious difference between desktop and laptop computers is, of course, the size. A laptop was designed to be a portable machine that can be used on the road or in an office equally well. A desktop computer, on the other hand, is meant to be used in a single location like a home or an office. It is large and heavy, and has a number of separate parts, compared to a self-contained laptop.
Both desktops and laptops have their different advantages. Laptops are very convenient and portable, which is something that a desktop can’t be. As long as you can get a wireless connection you’ll be able to access the internet. And although they are small, many laptops can keep up with a desktop in terms of processing speed.
A desktop computer, on the other hand, may not offer the convenience of mobility, but it does offer the convenience of customizability and simple upgradability. Most laptops cannot be easily upgraded. If the consumer decides that there is a need for greater memory or processing power, chances are that an entirely new computer will have to be purchased. A desktop PC, however, can last for years. A consumer can easily change out everything from the hard drive to the RAM to the CPU. It is a quick and easy way to keep a computer updated with the latest technology and software without breaking the bank.
Another difference between the two is the cost. Because they are more modular and customizable, desktops tend to be a lot cheaper than laptops. If you’re going to get the same amount of power out of a laptop as you would a comparable desktop, you’ll definitely have to pay extra.
What it really comes down to in the end is the needs of the user. Yes, desktops can save you money, but laptops are more mobile and convenient. But then again, you can keep a desktop longer because you can upgrade it as needed. Keep these things in mind when you make your next purchase.
