The bedroom is your child’s first stage, where he or she gets to try new things, imagine new worlds and discover new interests. It’s that little haven where your tot should be able to explore and grow. Always remember to consider the interests of your child when designing his or her room, no matter how new those pursuits might be. It helps your child enjoy his or her private space, while at the same time nurturing that new interest.

Choosing a theme is best done with your child. Get your son or daughter involved in the decision-making and designing process so that he or she will feel more responsible about the room. Start by finding out what his or her likes, dislikes, favorite colors and least appealing items. Let your child know that his or her input was an important factor in the design process.

For example, a child who shows an early interest in music might benefit most from a musically themed room design. You can start on the walls with any color that your child prefers, followed stenciled instruments or a musical staff running around the room as a border. You might even want to try hanging an old instrument or two to see if your kid will pick it up and play it.

For girls, popular theme choices are fairies and princesses. Belle, Ariel, Snow White and Rapunzel are top picks to join the girls in their bedroom. Female cartoon characters like Minnie Mouse, Princess Fiona and Mulan are also well-liked in decorating a girl’s bedroom. Some use the entire movie or story plot instead of just one character to decorate the room. With this, you can use photos, movie posters, fancy fabrics, fairytale ambiance or castle design to meet this theme.

Regardless of your eventual choice of theme, there are certain items and elements that shouldn’t be absent in any child’s room. A wide open space, for example, is crucial so that your child will have room to play and romp around. Complement this with abundant storage utilities for toys and books. You’ll also want to designate an area with a table and chair where your child can read, write and color.

It’s important to remember that whether it’s a boy or girl’s bedroom, there should be enough space for your child to play in. Avoid clutter and overcrowding the furniture. Your kid doesn’t really need a big sofa or a fancy coffee table. Spare such things for the teenage years. In the meantime, your little one only has play in mind so allot enough playroom for him/her to enjoy in.

Decorating for your own child’s bedroom can get difficult, but the effort is well worth it. Few things beat seeing the look of excitement on your child’s face upon seeing a new little wonderland that’s all his or hers. It’s all a matter of getting all the right items in there and pulling out all the stops for your child - and your child’s room.
